Meade ETX-70 image gallery – # 1 – galaxies

The third of my Youtube trilogy of deepsky imaging from suburbia via a small Meade ETX-70 Telescope + CCD camera – little or nothing visible through the same telescope aimed at these faint objects.

Over a decade of use quite a lot! LX200 scope = price of a small car+homebuilt dome. SX MX9 CCD camera=price of good holiday but piggybacked ETX70 used for pics was a freebie;-)

idk but the Orion Starshooter is 300 bucks on Amazon. I might get that one.

If I were to invest in buying an imaging camera, but a starters one. Which would you prefer?

    Do you know if …
Do you know if Meade has an equivalent CCD camera?. Also I want to congratulate you for this images. I’ve never seen images like these taken with a small telescope before. Is that an LXD200 you have your etx-70 mounted on? I hope to get a ETX-125 in the near future.

    Hi – the ETX-60 is …
Hi – the ETX-60 is very similar to my ETX-70 and results should be comparable – the clue to my success is probably my ultra-sensitive [and hence expensive] mono Starlight Xpress CCD;-)

I have a etx-60 and I dream of getting views like this. Can I do that with it and what would you recommend?

    Hi- whilst the …
Hi- whilst the human eye is a near perfect sensor it sees ‘movies’ at a frame rate of ~5 fps. Beyond about 1/5th second it ’sees’ no more – hence use of CCD cameras for long exposures of not fractions of a second but many minutes to build up an image of these faint galaxies. A 10 minutes camera exposures records about 3000 time more light than the eye however long you staring through the eyepiece! Fact.

H-O-W do you get these pictures with etx70??????i can’t see a galaxy with a celestron nexstar 6 se!!!!!!

Hi – it can be …
Hi – it can be tricky to find them – you need a starchart like free download Cartes du Ciel software and start with a brightish object like the Orion nebula M42 and Hercules globular M13 [neither are galaxies but deepsky objects!] and the great Andromeda galaxy M31 – find a dark site and powerful bins for starters. If possible also join a local starparty. Hope that helps;-)

Hi – not sure what …
Hi – not sure what an etx-30 is? There’s etx-60, 70 and 80 and I’ve got the ‘70′. Not sure you can ’see’ these galaxies thro’ a small scope like these. I certainly can’t from light polluted London suburbs which is why I use an ultra sensitive [and rather expensive] CCD to record them in longish exposures of serveral minutes. Hope that clarifies;-)
